Triathlon water temperature: where the swim is cold, and where it is warm

The organiser publishes an average water temperature for 148 of 159 races. Read on 22 September 2026, it runs from 14 °C to 29 °C.

Method

One published figure per race

The value held for each race is the average water temperature shown on its own page. The organiser presents it as a guide drawn from previous editions. The temperature on race morning can sit a few degrees either side, and the wetsuit decision is taken then.

This page uses those averages to show where and when the water is cold or warm. The water temperature guide explains what the figure is and how the finder treats races that publish none.

By region

The region matters more than the month

Grouped by region, the published averages spread widely, and the ordering follows latitude and ocean currents:

  • Europe: median 20 °C across 53 races
  • Oceania: median 20 °C across 12 races
  • Africa: median 21 °C across 6 races
  • North America: median 22 °C across 35 races
  • Latin America: median 23 °C across 25 races
  • Middle East: median 23 °C across 5 races
  • Asia: median 28.5 °C across 12 races

Grouped by month instead, the medians stay within a few degrees of each other all year, because the calendar follows the seasons: races are scheduled when the local water is at a workable temperature.

A tropical bay with warm turquoise water and a sandy shore

Both ends of the range

33 races at 18 °C or below, 39 at 24 °C or above

At the cold end, 33 races publish an average of 18 °C or less. A wetsuit is close to universal there where it is allowed, and a swim shortened for conditions is a real possibility.

At the warm end, 39 races publish 24 °C or more. Above roughly that point wetsuit use is commonly restricted, and swim comfort becomes a question of heat. This site does not hold the thresholds themselves, because they depend on the rules applied to each race and are not published as a field.

Water rarely decides a race on its own. Put it next to the month, the region and the course labels.

Rows marked “not published” are fields no source publishes for these races. No score is computed from the rows above: a single number would hide which of them decided it. Figures read on 22 Sept 2026.

The 11 races that publish no temperature

These races stay in every list on this site with an empty water cell. They are IRONMAN 70.3 San Salvador, IRONMAN 70.3 Laoag, IRONMAN 70.3 Curitiba, IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Varas, IRONMAN 70.3 Barranquilla, IRONMAN Penghu, IRONMAN 70.3 Brasilia, IRONMAN 70.3 Northern California, IRONMAN 70.3 Omaha, IRONMAN 70.3 Ruidoso New Mexico, IRONMAN 70.3 Boise.

If one of them matters to you, the organiser's athlete guide or a message to the race office is the place to ask. If you find a published figure, the contact page takes it.

Questions this page is asked

Which race has the coldest water?

The lowest published average is IRONMAN Valdivia, IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta, at 14 °C.

Which race has the warmest water?
Will I be allowed a wetsuit?

That is decided on race morning against the measured temperature and the rules that apply to the race. The published average tells you which answer is likely.

Why is the median by month so flat?

Because organisers schedule each race for the season when its local water is usable. A cold-water race in June and a warm-water race in December both land near the middle of the range.
