How the day is laid out

The swim is held in the ocean. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

The swim uses a rolling start: athletes enter the water a few at a time. The water is usually around 29 °C at this time of year.

The bike course is hilly.

The run course is flat.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 25 to 30 °C. The overall cut-off is 17 hours.

The race was first held in 2000.

A non-wetsuit swim

The organiser announces a non-wetsuit swim. The water measured on race day was 28 °C in 2023 and 29 °C in 2024 and 2025. The rolling start sends athletes in four or five at a time, and a 200 m run leads from the swim exit to T1.

The bike is two loops from Pantai Kok around the hills of Datai, past the Langkawi falls, with aid stations run by local communities. ironman.com describes the bike transition as air-conditioned. The two-lap run follows the airport runway to the beachfront at Cenang.
