IRONMAN in Scandinavia and the Baltics: which race to choose

6 IRONMAN races in Denmark, Sweden and Estonia, from June to August: 3 over the full distance and 3 over the 70.3. Also covered: Norseman, Swedeman and Joroinen.

Where the figures come from

Counts, climbing, cut-offs and water temperatures are read from the catalogue and recalculated whenever a race is updated. They come from the official race pages: ironman.com for the IRONMAN races, nxtri.com for Norseman, swextri.com for Swedeman and finntriathlon.fi for Joroinen. The water readings quoted by year come from the "Historical weather" table of the ironman.com course pages, for 2024 to 2026. Dates and registration statuses were read on 3 November 2026.

Norway and Finland have no IRONMAN race in the catalogue. The Sweden, Denmark and Estonia pages list every race in each country; the region covered here counts 12 triathlons in all.

Norseman, Swedeman and Joroinen: outside the IRONMAN circuit

Norseman Xtreme Triathlon starts on Saturday 7 August 2027 at 05:00 with a jump from a ferry into the Hardangerfjord at Eidfjord, and finishes at the top of Mount Gausta. The catalogue gives 3000 m of bike climbing and 1700 m on the run. Each athlete races with a support team. Places are drawn by ballot: for 2027 it closed on 11 October 2026 with 16,033 entries, according to the organiser.

Swedeman Xtreme Triathlon is held on Saturday 10 July 2027 in Jämtland: 3.8 km of swimming ending below the Tännforsen waterfall, 205 km of cycling with nearly 2,000 m of climbing according to the organiser, then a mountain run over Åreskutan, partly with a support runner. The organiser expects water around 15 °C. A shorter Solo Point Five race is held two days earlier.

Finntriathlon Joroinen – Puolimatka is held on Saturday 17 July 2027: 1.9 km in Lake Valvatus, 90 km of non-drafting cycling and 21 km of running. Entries for 2027 opened on 30 October 2026; according to finntriathlon.fi, the fee is EUR 219 from 2 November to 31 December 2026, then rises in steps until July.

Choosing between them

Registration decides first. On 3 November 2026, only the Tallinn races, full distance and 70.3, were still open among the IRONMAN races of the region. Kalmar, Copenhagen, Elsinore and Jönköping were sold out.

Then the course. Among the IRONMAN full distances, Tallinn has the longest cut-off and the least bike climbing, Copenhagen the shortest cut-off and the most climbing, and Kalmar sits between the two: 16 h and 750 m. Among the 70.3s, Tallinn climbs least and Jönköping most.

Then the calendar. ironman.com gives the title "Viking of the North" to athletes who finish an IRONMAN 70.3 and an IRONMAN in the Nordics in the same calendar year. Elsinore leaves eight weeks before Kalmar, Jönköping six. For an extreme race, Norseman depends on the ballot, while Swedeman was open on 3 November 2026. The extreme triathlon guide compares them with the other XTRI races, and the IRONMAN in Europe guide sets these full distances against the rest of the continent.

Water between 16 and 20 °C

The ironman.com course pages measured the water between 16 and 20 °C from 2024 to 2026: 19 and 20 °C at Kalmar, 19 and 18 °C at Copenhagen, 16 to 17 °C at Elsinore, 18 °C at Jönköping in 2025. The Tallinn course page shows no reading for those years.

Under the 2026 IRONMAN Competition Rules, age-group athletes may wear a wetsuit up to 24.5 °C and must wear one below 16 °C. The Elsinore readings sit right at that threshold. Norseman and Swedeman follow their own race manuals. The wetsuit rules guide sets out every threshold.

Sold out: what is left for 2027

On 3 November 2026, ironman.com marked Kalmar, Copenhagen, Elsinore and Jönköping sold out for 2027, and offered to notify athletes of any change. The Tallinn full distance and 70.3 were open, as was Swedeman. Joroinen had opened its 2027 entries on 30 October, and the 2027 Norseman draw had already taken place.

Registration is done on each organiser's site. At Norseman, a drawn athlete still has to register and pay the entry fee of EUR 550 by 14 November 2026, according to nxtri.com.
