How the day is laid out

The swim is held in the sea. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

Everyone starts the swim together, in a mass start.

The bike course is hilly, with about 3,000 m of climbing.

The run course is hilly, with about 1,700 m of climbing.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 7 to 15 °C.

The race was first held in 2003.

This is an extreme triathlon: the course is chosen for its terrain and its climbing, not for speed, and self-sufficiency and a support crew are part of the rules.

Ballot and support crew

Places for 2027 are drawn by ballot; the XTRI World Tour lists the window as closing on 11 October 2026 at 23:59 CEST. The tour requires a support team for its full-distance races, so the trip is planned for two. The first two men and the first two women at each full-distance XTRI partner race also earn a place here, at the XTRI World Championship.
