IRONMAN in Austria: which race to choose

3 IRONMAN races in Austria in the catalogue: the full distance in Klagenfurt and 2 IRONMAN 70.3, in St. Pölten and Zell am See. The month and the bike course separate them.

Where the figures come from

Counts, climbing, altitude and cut-offs are read from the catalogue and recalculated whenever a race is updated. They come from the official race pages, ironman.com for the IRONMAN races. The race-day water readings quoted come from the "Historical weather" table of the ironman.com course pages, for 2024 to 2026. Registration statuses were read on 29 October 2026.

The water average displayed at the top of an ironman.com race page can differ from those readings. Zell am See shows 17 °C, while the table gives 23 °C in 2024 and 21 °C in 2025. This page quotes the readings. The Austria page lists every race in the country, 9 in total.

The Lendkanal in Klagenfurt between grassy banks, with the Lendwurm boat moored on the right

Klagenfurt: the full distance, in June

IRONMAN Kaernten-Klagenfurt, Austria is held on 13 June 2027 and has been run since 1998. The swim crosses Lake Wörthersee and finishes in the Lendkanal, a canal lined with spectators. The run is flat, through the city centre and along the lake towards Krumpendorf, with 84 m of climbing.

ironman.com rates the bike rolling, yet its course page describes hilly terrain with steep climbs. The catalogue gives 1754 m of climbing over 180 km. The cut-off is 17 h, and the swim uses a rolling start.

ironman.com measured the lake at 19 °C in 2024, 22 °C in 2025 and 21 °C in 2026. The 2024 race was cool, with air between 10 and 16 °C; in 2025 the high reached 30 °C.

For a first full distance, the best IRONMAN for beginners compares the options, and IRONMAN in Europe sets Klagenfurt against the other full distances of the continent.

St. Pölten: a 70.3 in May, three weeks before Klagenfurt

IRONMAN 70.3 St. Pölten is held on 23 May 2027. In December 2025, ironman.com announced that IRONMAN was returning to the city in 2027, after more than 20 years of racing there. The organiser presents it as a warm-up before a mid-season IRONMAN, and the date falls three weeks before Klagenfurt.

The swim uses two lakes. ironman.com rates the bike rolling, and its course page describes a hilly route through vineyards and along the river. The run, rated flat, goes through the baroque old town and the modern city. The catalogue has no climbing figure or cut-off for this course yet, and the course page has no water reading for 2024 to 2026; the average shown at the top of the race page is 19 °C.

At 267 m, it is the lowest of the Austrian IRONMAN races. The catalogue gives air from 12 to 22 °C.

Zell am See: the climbing race, at the end of August

IRONMAN 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun holds its 15th edition on 29 August 2027. ironman.com lists it as the winner of the 2025 Athlete Choice Award for best IRONMAN 70.3 overall worldwide.

The swim is in Lake Zell, at 750 m. The bike heads into the mountains: rated hilly, with 1011 m of climbing over 90 km. The run follows the lake shore and is rated flat. The cut-off is 8 h 30 min, with a rolling start.

ironman.com measured the lake at 23 °C in 2024 and 21 °C in 2025; the 2026 reading is missing. Air reached 30 °C in 2024. The course maps online are those of 2026; the 2027 maps will be published closer to the race.

Choosing between them

The month comes first. St. Pölten opens the Austrian IRONMAN season in May, Klagenfurt follows in June and Zell am See closes it at the end of August.

Then the bike. Zell am See climbs 1011 m in 90 km on mountain roads. ironman.com rates St. Pölten and Klagenfurt rolling, although both course pages mention hills. For a 70.3 as a build-up to Klagenfurt, the St. Pölten date fits. For a 70.3 chosen for the climbing and the Alps, Zell am See is the one. The half-distance races in Europe page compares them with the rest of the continent.

Several independent races were open the same day. Austria Triathlon Podersdorf, in Burgenland near Vienna, holds a half distance (1.9/88/21 km) on 4 September 2027, on a flat, closed and often windy bike course, with wave starts. The same day it also holds a full distance (3.8/180/42 km), not yet in the catalogue. Trumer Triathlon, near Salzburg, holds its middle distance on the weekend of 16 to 18 July 2027. ALOHA TRI Mondseeland holds a middle distance on 5 September 2027 at Mondsee, with a wave start and a bike loop around Lake Mondsee and Lake Attersee, on roads open to traffic according to the organiser.

Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee, in Tyrol on 27 June 2027, races over 2/80/18 km with 1048 m of climbing.

Wetsuit and water

Under the 2026 IRONMAN Competition Rules, age-group athletes may wear a wetsuit up to 24.5 °C and must wear one below 16 °C. The limit for professionals is 21.9 °C. The race-day readings quoted on this page run from 19 to 23 °C, so the wetsuit was allowed for age-group athletes in each of those years. The decision is made on race morning. The wetsuit rules guide sets out every threshold.
