Course profile

Flat triathlon courses: bike and run both labelled flat

49 races of 159 carry a flat label on the bike and on the run: 10 full distance, 35 half distance and 4 short course. Read on 22 September 2026.

Method

What the flat label is

The organiser gives each bike and run course one of three words: flat, rolling or hilly. This page keeps the races where both words are flat. The label is the organiser's own description, and no published rule says how much climbing a flat course may contain.

Only 10 races publish a bike elevation figure, and 2 of them carry the flat label. IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona is one: its bike course is labelled flat and its course page states about 750 m of elevation gain over 180 km. Treat the label as a description of the terrain's character and look for a figure when one exists.

Full distance

The 10 flat full-distance races

At full distance a flat course removes the climbing from 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km on the run, which makes pacing more predictable over a very long day. The 10 races with both labels flat are IRONMAN Calella-Barcelona, IRONMAN California, IRONMAN Florida, IRONMAN Cozumel, IRONMAN Western Australia, IRONMAN Vietnam, IRONMAN Brazil, IRONMAN Kalmar-Sweden, IRONMAN Belgium Knokke-Heist, IRONMAN Italy Emilia Romagna.

Several of them are coastal. On an exposed coast the wind decides the bike split more than the terrain does, and the course labels say nothing about wind.

Limits

What a flat label leaves out

Heat is the first thing it leaves out. The median published high air temperature is 26 °C across the flat races and 26 °C across all races, so choosing flat does not move you towards cooler days.

Wind is the second, and road surface the third, and neither is published as a field. A flat course also keeps you in the same position on the bike for the whole leg, which some athletes find harder on the back and neck than a course with climbs to break it up.

Questions this page is asked

Is a flat course faster?

On the same day and in the same conditions, a course with less climbing usually gives a faster bike split. Conditions are rarely the same from one race to another, and this site holds no finishing times to compare.

Why do some flat courses publish hundreds of metres of climbing?

Because the label describes the character of the course over its whole length. 750 m spread over 180 km is a gentle average, and the organiser still calls that course flat.

Where is the flattest course?

Only a figure could answer that, and only 10 races publish one. Among them the lowest is IRONMAN 70.3 Eagleman, at about 101 m on the bike.

Are short-course races included?

Yes, the 4 short-course races with both labels flat appear in the list. Tick a distance in the finder to leave them out.
