How the day is laid out

The swim is held in a bay. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

The swim uses a rolling start: athletes enter the water a few at a time. The water is usually around 17 °C at this time of year.

The bike course is hilly, with about 1,400 m of climbing.

The run course is rolling, with about 325 m of climbing.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 18 to 25 °C. The overall cut-off is 16 h 15 min.

The race was first held in 2021.

A long run to T1, then wind on the Guincho road

The swim is a single 3.8 km loop in Cascais bay, from Praia da Ribeira to the fortress at the Clube Naval. The organiser gives 17 to 19 °C for the water in October, and the course page lists 17 °C measured in 2023 and 18 °C in 2024 and 2025, below the 24.5 °C up to which IRONMAN allows wetsuits for age-group athletes.

T1 is at the Hipódromo, 600 m from the swim exit. The bike makes two loops past Guincho beach and the Serra de Sintra. The run makes three loops from Cascais along the Guincho road to Cabo Raso, a course the organiser calls challenging on a windy day.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Portugal-Cascais is held on the same day.
