How the day is laid out

The swim is held in the sea. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

The swim uses a rolling start: athletes enter the water a few at a time. The water is usually around 24 °C at this time of year.

The bike course is hilly, with about 2,400 m of climbing.

The run course is flat.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 18 to 26 °C. The overall cut-off is 16 hours.

The race was first held in 1982.

Wetsuit or not, and the bike checkpoints

The course page lists the water measured on race day: 21 °C in 2024 and 26 °C in 2025. IRONMAN allows wetsuits for age-group athletes up to 24.5 °C. Above that, the competitive race is swum without. The separate non-competitive wetsuit wave that IRONMAN may open, with no awards or slots, applies only to certain events, such as those sanctioned by USA Triathlon. Recent editions have fallen on both sides of that line; the wetsuit rules guide gives the thresholds.

The swim cut-off is 2 h 15. On the bike, the organiser sets clock-time checkpoints: Gourdon at km 53 before 1.10 pm, Andon at km 80 before 2.45 pm, Côte de Saint-Pons at km 120.5 before 4.55 pm and Saint-Laurent at km 159 before 6.10 pm.
