IRONMAN in New Zealand: which race to choose

2 IRONMAN races in New Zealand, held in Taupō on the same Saturday in March: the full distance and the 70.3. The page also covers Challenge Wānaka in February, Tinman in November and XTERRA Rotorua in April.

Where the figures come from

Counts, climbing, altitude and cut-offs are read from the catalogue and recalculated whenever a race is updated. They come from the official race pages: ironman.com for the Taupō races, challengefamily.com for Wānaka, the Triathlon Tauranga site for Tinman and xterraplanet.com for Rotorua. The water and air readings quoted come from the "Historical weather" table of the ironman.com course pages, for 2024 to 2026. Dates, registration statuses and entry rules were read on 2 November 2026.

The New Zealand page lists every race in the country, 6 in total.

Taupō: the full distance and the 70.3, on the same Saturday

IRONMAN New Zealand and IRONMAN 70.3 New Zealand are both held on Saturday 6 March 2027 in Taupō, so the choice between them is a choice of distance, not of trip. ironman.com calls the full distance the longest-running IRONMAN outside Kona; the catalogue gives a first edition in 1985.

Both swim in Lake Taupō. The full distance starts in deep water, all together; the 70.3 starts from the beach in a rolling start. Both bikes are rated rolling and both runs flat by ironman.com. The full distance climbs 1354 m over 180 km and 255 m on the run; the 70.3 bike climbs 588 m over 90 km. The town sits at 374 m.

The overall cut-off is 17 h for the full distance and 8 h 30 min for the 70.3. Registration for both was open on 2 November 2026. The 70.3 also takes relay teams and an aquabike entry.

Challenge Wānaka: a hundred-format race in February

Challenge Wānaka is held on Saturday 20 February 2027, two weeks before Taupō. It uses the Challenge Family "hundred" format: 2 km of swimming, 80 km of cycling and 18 km of running, a little shorter than a 70.3. An aquabike version is also offered.

The swim is a rectangle in Roys Bay, on Lake Wānaka. The bike runs from the town towards the Treble Cone area and back, with 1047 m of climbing over 80 km according to the race page, against 588 m over 90 km at the Taupō 70.3. The run is an out-and-back along the lake with 82 m of climbing.

The race page gives an average water temperature of 16 °C. It publishes no cut-off and no entry price: ask the organiser before planning around them.

Tinman and XTERRA Rotorua: shorter races, November and April

Tinman Triathlon Standard Distance is held on Sunday 22 November 2026 at Mount Maunganui, from Pilot Bay. The standard distance is a 1.5 km ocean swim, 40 km of non-drafting cycling and 10 km of running; the organiser also runs a draft-legal sprint, a para race and shorter youth races. Triathlon NZ uses it as the selection event for the World Triathlon Age Group Standard Championships, and it hosts the national age-group championship over the standard distance.

The XTERRA Rotorua Festival follows on Saturday 10 April 2027, with 2 off-road triathlons in the catalogue: XTERRA Rotorua Festival Full Distance Triathlon, XTERRA Rotorua Festival Short Distance Triathlon. The start is at the Blue Lake, Lake Tikitapu, and the trails run through Whakarewarewa Forest. The event page shows 28 slots for the XTERRA World Championship. The XTERRA guide explains how these races differ from road triathlons.

Choosing between them

Distance decides first. For a full distance, Taupō is the only option in the catalogue. For a half, Taupō offers a 70.3 on rolling roads and Wānaka a shorter hundred format with more climbing on the bike: 1047 m against 588 m.

Then the date. Tinman opens the season in November; Wānaka and Taupō fall two weeks apart in February and March; Rotorua closes it in April. For athletes from Europe or North America, Wānaka and Taupō fall in their winter, which is much of the appeal of the trip.

ironman.com lists the Taupō races as World Championship qualifiers. Wānaka and Taupō are a long drive or a domestic flight apart: Wānaka is in Otago, on the South Island, while Taupō, Mount Maunganui and Rotorua are on the North Island. The IRONMAN in Australia page covers the other side of the Tasman.

Cold mornings and lake water

The air is cool at the start in Taupō. The ironman.com table gives morning lows of 6 °C in 2024, 5 °C in 2025 and 8 °C in 2026, with highs of 18 to 20 °C.

The same table shows Lake Taupō at 21 °C in each of 2024, 2025 and 2026, while the header of the race page shows an average of 18 °C and the swim description "around 19 degrees". Under the 2026 IRONMAN Competition Rules, age-group athletes may wear a wetsuit up to 24.5 °C and must wear one below 16 °C; all these readings fall in the allowed range. The decision is made on race morning. The wetsuit rules guide sets out every threshold.

Prices and membership

ironman.com shows its New Zealand prices with processing fees and GST included, and sells IRONMAN Experiences packages powered by Nirvana on top of the race entry. Compare the base entry with what each package adds before choosing.

Tinman asks athletes who are not members of Triathlon NZ to pay a one-day membership with the standard and sprint entries, and its prices exclude booking fees. Registration is done on each organiser's site.
