How the day is laid out

The swim is held in a lake. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

The swim uses a rolling start: athletes enter the water a few at a time. The water is usually around 21 °C at this time of year.

The bike course is rolling, with about 1,000 m of climbing.

The run course is flat.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 15 to 33 °C. The overall cut-off is 15 h 30 min.

A lake 20 km away, a finish in the old town

The swim is one 3.8 km loop of Ulibarri-Gamboa lake, in Landa Provincial Park, about 20 km from the city centre. Transition 1 is beside the lake, where athletes collect their bike gear from a bag; transition 2 is in the centre, on Calle Olaguíbel. ironman.com measured the water at 21 °C in 2024 and 22 °C in 2025, and race-day highs of 32 to 35 °C from 2024 to 2026.

The bike covers 2.5 laps through the villages of Álava and shares a section with the Camino de Santiago. The run is four flat laps of the city centre, with the finish in Plaza España.
