How the day is laid out

The swim is held in the ocean. At an average of 16 °C this is cold water. A wetsuit will be worn by almost everyone who is allowed one, and a swim shortened or cancelled for conditions is a real possibility at this end of the range.

The bike leg is labelled hilly. It climbs about 1169 m.

The run is labelled flat.

A hilly bike ahead of a flat run puts the day's decision early: what you spend on the climbs is what the run will not have.

Expect air between 13 °C and 19 °C on race day. A spread of 6 degrees across the day matters as much as the peak, because what you wear at the swim exit is rarely what you want at the far end of the bike.

What the course page adds

The swim is one loop from Vilamoura Marina beach, sheltered by the marina pier. The organiser gives 16 to 18 °C for the water in April.

Transition is in a large car park less than 100 m from the swim exit. It is long, and bikes may only be mounted at its exit. The bike is a single 90 km loop inland. The run is two flat loops along the seafront of Vilamoura and Quarteira, with two turnaround points.
