IRONMAN in Mexico: which race to choose

5 IRONMAN races in Mexico: 1 full distance in Cozumel and 4 IRONMAN 70.3. All swim in warm sea water, so the month and the bike course decide.

Where the figures come from

Each figure on this page is read from the race pages of the catalogue and recalculated whenever a race is updated. Distances, cut-offs and climbing come from ironman.com. Air and water temperatures are the organiser's averages for the race month. Where ironman.com also gives the reading measured on past race days, the page quotes it.

The page covers IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3. Mexico has 7 races in the catalogue in total, including 2 XTERRA races near San José del Cabo: the Mexico page lists them all. On 20 October 2026, ironman.com also showed IRONMAN 70.3 Acapulco and IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey without a date. They will appear here once a date is published.

Cozumel: the full distance in November, a 70.3 in September

IRONMAN Cozumel is the only full-distance IRONMAN in Mexico, held in late November. ironman.com lists it as the IRONMAN Latin American Championship in 2026. The swim is in the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park. The bike is three laps of the island, for 173 m of climbing, and the run finishes at the City Hall plaza downtown. The cut-off is 17 h.

The organiser publishes the water measured on race day: 24 °C in 2023, 26 °C in 2024 and 27 °C in 2025.

IRONMAN 70.3 Cozumel uses the same island in late September. T1 is at Chankanaab, the bike covers 1.3 laps of the coast road counter-clockwise, and the two-lap run passes the waterfront and the main square. It is the hottest race of the group, with an average high of 33 °C. The water was measured at 28 °C in 2024 and 27 °C in 2025.

Campeche and Veracruz: the Gulf of Mexico

IRONMAN 70.3 Campeche starts from Playa Bonita with a rolling start. The bike covers two loops along the Malecón and the Mérida highway, and the three-lap run ends at the Puerta de Mar, the sea gate of the walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Earlier editions were held in March; the 2026 race is in November. ironman.com notes that the 2025 edition sold out. The water was measured at 29 °C in 2024 and 24 °C in 2025, both March editions.

IRONMAN 70.3 Veracruz is new, with a first edition in December 2026. The swim is in the Gulf, the bike runs flat through the city and along the seafront, and the run follows the waterfront. ironman.com has not yet published a total cut-off for it, so the catalogue shows none.

Both courses are described as flat by the organiser.

Los Cabos: the climbing course, in April

IRONMAN 70.3 Los Cabos is the only one with a rolling bike course: 918 m of climbing, against 347 m at IRONMAN 70.3 Veracruz. The town sits where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez, between desert and coast.

The race was held in late October or November until 2023 and moved to April in 2026. Mornings are the coolest of the group, with an average low of 18 °C. ironman.com gives no measured water reading for recent editions, so its water average is a rough guide only.

A season from April to December

April. Los Cabos, on the Pacific side.

September. The Cozumel 70.3, in the warmest weather.

November. Campeche, then the full distance in Cozumel two weeks later.

December. Veracruz, the newest race of the group.

What the averages leave out

Average water temperatures run from 25 °C to 29 °C. Under IRONMAN rules, age-group athletes may wear a wetsuit up to 24.5 °C. Between 24.6 and 28.8 °C, IRONMAN may, at its discretion and for some events, open a separate non-competitive wetsuit wave, with no awards or championship slots; it is not a general right. Above 28.8 °C it is not allowed. In Mexico, most race mornings fall in the middle band or above, so prepare to swim without one. The reading on race morning decides, and it can surprise: Cozumel measured 24 °C in 2023. The wetsuit rules guide sets out every threshold.

On 20 October 2026, ironman.com showed registration open for each race on this page. Registration is always done on the organiser's site. To compare with races further north, see the IRONMAN calendar.

Questions

How many IRONMAN races are there in Mexico?

The catalogue lists 5: 1 full distance, IRONMAN Cozumel, and 4 IRONMAN 70.3. ironman.com also shows 70.3 races in Acapulco and Monterrey, without a date on 20 October 2026.

Which IRONMAN 70.3 in Mexico suits a first half?

Campeche, Veracruz and Cozumel are flat according to the organiser. IRONMAN 70.3 Los Cabos climbs 918 m on the bike. Where a cut-off is published, it is 8 h 30 min for the whole race.

Can I wear a wetsuit at IRONMAN Cozumel?

It depends on the reading on race morning. The organiser's average is 26 °C, above the 24.5 °C limit for age-group wetsuits; in that band, IRONMAN may open a separate non-competitive wetsuit wave, without awards or slots. In 2023 the water was 24 °C, low enough for a wetsuit.

When is IRONMAN Cozumel held?

The full distance is held in the second half of November, like every edition held since 2016. The 70.3 is in late September.

Is there an IRONMAN in Monterrey or Mexico City?

None in Mexico City. ironman.com lists IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey, which swims in the Santa Lucía, a man-made river in the city centre, but gave no date on 20 October 2026.
