How the day is laid out

The swim is held in a river. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

The swim uses a rolling start: athletes enter the water a few at a time. The water is usually around 25 °C at this time of year.

The bike course is rolling, with about 1,580 m of climbing.

The run course is rolling, with about 351 m of climbing.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 18 to 27 °C. The overall cut-off is 16 h 30 min.

The race was first held in 2014.

A swim with the current

The swim is point-to-point in the Tennessee River, from a dock 2.4 miles upstream of transition to Ross's Landing. All of it is with the current except the final stretch after the red turn buoy. ironman.com recorded 25 °C in the water in 2025 and 24 °C in 2026, and calls the wetsuit a race-time decision. Under IRONMAN rules, age-group athletes may wear one up to 24.5 °C; from 24.6 to 28.8 °C it is allowed but rules them out of awards and slots.

The bike is three loops on US-27 towards Soddy Daisy, with a dedicated lane. The run is two loops through downtown, the Riverwalk, Veterans Bridge and the North Shore.
