How the day is laid out

The swim is held in a river. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

The organiser publishes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km on the bike and 42.2 km of running.

The swim uses a rolling start: athletes enter the water a few at a time. The water is usually around 23 °C at this time of year.

The bike course is rolling, with about 1,483 m of climbing.

The run course is flat, with about 62 m of climbing.

Typical temperatures for the month run from 13 to 24 °C. The overall cut-off is 17 hours.

The race was first held in 1985.

October since 2026, and a climb just before T2

IRONMAN Australia was held in early May until 2025. The 2026 edition moved to 18 October, and the 2027 date is 17 October. The bike combines two inland laps on Telegraph Point Road and Pembrooke Road with two laps of Ocean Drive, and ends with the Matthew Flinders Drive climb before T2. The one-lap swim in the Hastings River crosses the weir on the way out and on the way back. Cut-offs from each athlete's start: 2 h 20 min for the swim, 10 h 30 min for the bike.
