How the day is laid out

The swim is held in a lake. The wetsuit call is made on race morning, against the temperature measured then.

From Whiskeytown Lake to Redding: two sites and the heat

The swim is one lap of Whiskeytown Lake at sunrise, with T1 in the lake's car park. The bike crosses Shasta County to Redding, and the organiser points to a net loss of nearly 1,000 ft (about 300 m) over the 56 miles: there is climbing, but the course ends lower than it starts. The run follows the Sacramento River Trail and crosses the Sundial Bridge before the finish in downtown Redding, so race morning means setting up in two places.

Heat is the other factor. The course page lists a high of 32 °C for 2026 and 31 °C for 2024 and 2025. No water temperature is published, so the wetsuit decision is made on the morning.
